As students study abroad and decide where they may want to travel, they face the decision of where to go and study. By studying in a country such as China, a better understanding of social and political change can be gathered.

NPR correspondent and China Road author Rob Gifford shared his experience in China with students, faculty and staff on Tuesday in Alumni Gym.

NPR correspondent Rob Gifford explains his experience while in China.

Gifford’s main points included:

  • China much more brittle then what it looks like on the surface.
  • Gifford feels less worried for the short term, but is worried for the long term.
  • The gap between rural and urban China is becoming wider.
  • Urban China is moving toward urban America.

Overall, Gifford explained that “you feel freedom very much across China…there is a lot of space to live now.” He said that China “used to be in a birdcage, and now you’re in an aviary.”
